Placements in IIMs

Thinking of doing an MBA? One starts imagining a lucrative job offer at the end of the course and the start of a thriving career. While choosing a B – School, almost every aspirant is looking for Brand name, Specializations offered, Alumni network, Pedagogy, Faculty etc. Two factors precede these – Course Fee and PLACEMENTS. For most of the candidates Return on Investment (ROI) is an important parameter in evaluating a B – School. ROI, simply put, is average or median salary, post completion of MBA, over cost incurred in completing the course. Placements/ ROI being quantifiable, becomes the key deciding factor in choice of the colleges most of the time. Placements mark a transition from a student life to corporate life i.e. transition from being a student to well evolved business leader/ manager. A right start with a significant compensation is always desirable. Also, please do keep in mind - Placement is a function of opportunities and conversion of the opportunities. Placements in IIMs can be broadly categorized into the following: Summer Placements: This is organized for first year students during October/ November months. This is primarily for internships in April – May (after completion of the first year). Internships are important from the point of PPO’s – Pre Placement Offers and also have a significant weight during the final placements. Quite a number of students are placed based on the internships. Lateral Placements: Usually takes place in January – February. This is for students who have more than 02 years of work experience, prior to joining the MBA course. Students here are recruited in Mid – Level Managerial positions. Final Placements: Usually takes place in February – March. This is mostly driven by your academic performance, internships and projects undertaken in your 02 years stay at IIMs, besides the other criteria. Extra – curricular will also have significant impact. Past academics and work experience, before joining the IIMs, have a important role in the final placements.
